Sound the Alarm for Climate Change

The Presentation Sisters Nagle Community remind you that Christian Aid, Trócaire and Friends of the Earth invite you to ring the changes on climate chaos on Saturday next, 8 December 2007.

From 3 – 14 December 2007 the UN Climate Change Conference will take place in Bali, Indonesia.  World leaders will meet to discuss the roadmap for future global action to avert the worst ravages of climate change.  The outcomes of this conference will have implications for everyone on the planet.

CHURCHES !!!   Can you help us Sound the Alarm by ringing your bells at 2pm for 2 mins on Dec 8th, to represent the 2 degrees temperature rise limit that cannot be exceeded if the world is to avoid catastrophic climate change?

ImageAll it takes is one or two Churches in each town or village to ring their bells in order to make an impact and we would like your Church to join in.  Get in touch with your priest, vicar, minister or pastor and ask them to arrange for the bells to be rung at 2pm precisely.  If your Church doesn’t have bells, then why not get in contact with other churches in your town that do?  Otherwise, gather as many people from your congregation as you can and make noise with alarm clocks, hand-bells, mobile phones, drums and anything else you can think of.  Invite members of other Churches in your town to come to whatever event you’re organising.

While the bells are ringing you can take a number of actions to let your local community know why this is happening.  You could:

  • Hold a carol service outside the Church and hand out flyers to passers-by
  • Ask your clergy for a prayer service to be held inside the Church
  • Organise an ecumenical climate change prayer service in your Church hall for all the Churches in your area
  • Host a “Night of non-power” by turning off the lights and heating and have a candlelit service with your coats on.  The service can focus on care for the environment and you could have a talk about the effects of climate change and how we can all make a difference
  • Get your youth workers to lead a session on climate change with the young people – Christian Aid and Trocaire can provide free resources to help you do this.
